The festival remembers annual journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and their sister Subhadra to Gundicha Temple by way of Mausi Maa Temple- aunt’s home, near Balagandi Chaka, Puri. This is the only day to allow non-Hindus and foreigners in the temple premises. The huge, colourfully decorated chariots carts of Balabhadra, Subhadra and Jagannatha are approximately 45 feet (14 m) high and are pulled by the thousands of pilgrims. They believe pulling of the cart is an auspicious thing. The trees like phassi and dhausa are used to construct the chariots. The chariot of Lord Jagannatha is called Nandighosa and It is forty-five feet high with sixteen wheels. Lord Balarama’s chariot is called Taladhwaja, with the Palm Tree on its flag and has fourteen wheels. The chariot of Subhadra is called Dwarpadalana, with 43 feet high with twelve wheels.
