Thripunithura, a heritage city at Ernakulam district in Kerala is famous for its grand Athachamayam celebrations. It is a majestic celebration which marks the commencement of the ten-day Onam Festival, the official state festival of Kerala. Athachamayam is a celebration of a legendary victory of the Raja (King) of Kochi. Decorated elephants, floats, musical ensembles and fascinating folk art forms like Theyyam, Karakattam, Mayilattom, Pulikali, Ammankudam,Chendamelam, Panchavadyam, Pambamelam, and Aattakavadi are the major attractions of the festival.

Pulikali (Tiger Dance) is one of an important folk art form of Kerala. The Swaraj round at Thrissur district plays host to this colourful carnival. Chathayam day, the fourth day of Onam festival, artists paint their bodies like tigers with stripes of yellow, red and black and dance with the rhythm of traditional musical instruments like thakil, udukku and chenda. The main theme of Pulikali is tiger hunting. It is an integral part of Onam celebrations in Kerala.
