The official festival of Telangana State- Bonalu festival, will begin from July 4 with splendor and great joy. The festival ends on July 28 after offer Bonalu at Old City.
Bonalu Festival is celebrated in the Mahakali temples of Hyderabad and Secunderabad of Telangana state. It is celebrated for one month in the Ashadam month. Bonalu means food in regional language. Offering of Bonalu to the goddess Mahakali is a form of thanksgiving for protecting her devotees from the attack of Plague disease.
It is believe that the festival was originated 150 years ago . At that time the disease Plague killed thousands of people which was believed to be due to the anger of goddess Mahakali and the Bonalu offering was started to calm the anger of the goddess. Various special poojas and offerings will be performed to Goddess Mahakali during the festival days. Fascinating processions and community feasts are the major attractions of this beautiful festival.
