Bhai Dooj is a festival celebrating the bond between a brother and a sister. The festival generally celebrated two days after Diwali. On that day, women pray for the long life of their brothers and they invite them into their houses, put on the customary tika on their foreheads and serve sweets. In return, brothers present them with gifts to show their affection.
The festival is known by different names across India. In Gujarati, Konkani and Marathi-speaking communities, it is known as Bhau Beej, while Bengalis call it Bhai Phota. In Nepal, it is known as Bhai Teeka.
