Vadakkechira was built by Shakthan Thampuran (1751-1805), the Raja of Cochin and is one of the four oldest ponds in Thrissur city of Kerala. Now the property is owned by Cochin Devaswom Board. At his time, Sakthan Thampuran built four ponds in Thrissur city for water management and irrigation purpose in his regime. The ponds are Vadakkechira, Padinjarechira, Kizakechira and Thekkechira.
