Pongal is a famous harvest celebrated in South India, especially in Tamilnadu. On that occasion the farmers express their gratitude for giving them to the elements responsible for a bumper harvest. This festival is a four day celebration. Pongal is celebrated on the first day of the Thai month, that is why the festival is called Thai Pongal.
On the day of Pongal, rice and pulses are cooked with milk and offered to the Sun God and the family deity, as a sign of respect.
The third day- Mattu Pongal day is is dedicated to the cattle (Especially Bullocks and Cows), which are responsible for their livelihood.
