Gandhi Mandapam or Mahatma Gandhi Memorial was built in the honour of Mahatma Gandhi, located at Kanyakumari, near Kanyakumari temple and beach. The place is an important attraction of Kanyakumari tour. Mahatma Gandhi has visited Kanyakumari two times at Kanyakumari, in the year of 1925 and then in 1937. After his demise, his ashes were kept in 12 different pots so as to transfer them to different parts of the country. One pot was brought to Kanyakumari to immerse the holy water of Kanyakumari. Before immersions, the pot was kept at the spot where the memorial is built to pay homage to the public. Later the ashes were immersed in the sea waters of Kanyakumari. After that Gandhi Mandapam was built at the same place.
